Machken is a desolate county in the southeast of Westonia, ruled by a sole religious leader called “The Mach”. As the cliff-ridden islands of Machken are surrounded by the sea and The impenetrable Flats, the county lives in solitude. It’s a relatively poor county and that shows in the quality of the houses and tools, but its people are more energetic as compensation.
Khustinia is the worker’s province. Its many islands make for plenty of fertile soil, which is used for growing the crops, namely Khin. All of the products go to the people of Machken, as there is no export to other counties.
Machken is currently ruled by Count Destin Rihmach as its sole ruler. He lives with his wife, Alenia in Fort Kassamach, which he had built on the Destinia Island in Hamania. He lives there together with his advisors, the Human female Lara Ibisnis and the Half Elf male Stan l’Ai. The people worship Destin as the messenger of Machna.
The royal guards, called the Demachnor, are mostly stationed in the capital, Siumach. Other soldiers are stationed all throughout Machken, most notably in Kannes. The people themselves are also very defensive. They are generally not friendly to foreigners and only want to be friendly to other worshipers of Machna.
There is an annual event where most of the people of Machken come together, named the Machken Games. The event is where people show their strength, have fun, and most importantly, possibly get chosen to be part of the Demachnor.
The county is completely isolated and has no trade with the other counties, which explains the uninterested behavior towards foreigners. There are no marketplaces in Machken, except for the one in the near-deserted Perton. Similarly, there are no inns, except for the one in the capital, Siumach. There are no marketplaces because The Mach controls the market and supplies everyone with the necessities as the people work hard for their food and other materials.
There are also no prisons in Machken, as all perpetrators are ritually executed in public in Siumach.
- Since the history is passed down from generation to generation, it is unknown whether the tales below are true history, legends or folklore.
Haman Konmach: Reigned 444 – 471
Haman was a human fighter who got a quest from the Duke to conquer the land beyond The Flats. Haman recruited a Human male Rogue and an Elven female Ranger to accompany him on his journey through The Flats. Along the way, they got attacked and harrassed by the wildest phenomena, like sand storms, giant worms, huge dragons, moving quicksand, sudden arrow showers and ghosts — which of these were real and which were illusions is not known.
When Haman arrived, he named the land Hamania and called himself the Emporer and promoted his two companions, Chad Ibisnis and Iggu l’Ai, to his advisors. Soon, the land seemed to sink into the water slowly and the party was helpless. It only got worse when Chad turned heavily ill. A mermaid came to the beach near the then capital, Haman Town. The mermaid promised Chad his relief from the illness and the county to rise from the waters as long as Haman pledged subservience to the god Machna. As soon as Haman knelt before the mermaid, Chad got well and the land rose. The land was renamed to Machken and the capital to Siumach. Haman also got the title “Konmach,” which means “First servant to and messenger of Machna.” As compensation of the loss of a county named after him, Haman named the southern islands to the province Hamania and the rest of the county was the second province and was named to Chadiggu.
To populate the empty Machken, Machna advised Haman to travel through Westonia in search of people struck by the same illness as Chad. If he cured the ill people with the power of Machna, they too would convert and move to Machken to worship Machna. In 446, Haman returned with roughly 200 Humans to populate Machken.
In 451, Haman got his first son, which Machna named Khustin.
Khustin Pitmach: Reigned 471 – 500
Khustin got the title of “Pitmach” (Second servant to and messenger of Machna) at the age of 20. The descendants of Ibisnis and l’Ai became the advisors of Khustin, to uphold the tradition. Khustin was significantly smarter than Haman and quickly noticed that the people needed to expend, since Siumach was getting overpopulated. He moved a large portion of the population over to Chadiggu and renamed that province to Khustinia. He noticed that the islands of Khustinia were very fertile and got the idea to grow crops there. There was already plenty of flora present on the islands, of which most notable, Khin, a type of rice, named after its discoverer. This was a great welcome to the people, as they only fed on fish during the Haman period. Later, Khustin found other edible crops, like potatoes and carrots. People flocked to Khustinia and made a settlement named Mayhust.
To gain some finances, Khustin also had a harbor town built in the very north of Khustinia, called Perton. Here, Khustin exported mostly fish and Khin, as they got both in abundant quantities. With the incoming finances, Khustin was able to make Machken a more thriving county.
Medlon Rolmach: Reigned 500 – 522
Medlon noticed the energy and strength of the people that were left to him. To put their strength to more use, Medlon came up with the Machken Games, which are numerous types of strength-based games, like Tug-O-War. Soon after, Medlon also thought of other ways to put the strength of the people to good use. He founded the Demachnor, the army of The Mach, sworn protectors of Machken. It’s a great honor to be part of the Demachnor and only the strongest people were allowed to be part of it. As a result, the people worked harder to gain more strength and perform better at the Machken Games, where the candidates for the Demachnor are chosen. The Demachnor mostly live in Siumach, the capital of Machken.
In 510, a huge army of unknown creatures appeared from The Flats and inhabited the west of Khustinia and slowly murdered people, starting with the harbor town Perton. Since the whole army of Demachnor was stationed in Siumach, they were late to protect the people in Khustinia. When they finally arrived, the Demachnor proved very effective, wiping out the foreign army in mere moments. The people cheered and Medlon founded the city of Kannes near the western border of Khustinia, where soldiers could live. Likewise, the western part of Khustinia became an independent province and was named Medlonia. Medlon promised to make the army larger with regular soldiers, protecting the borders of Machken. The elite army, the Demachnor, are stationed in Siumach again.
Since Perton was largely burned down and the people of Machken were suspicious of the outside world, all trade with the other counties was put to a halt. Perton remained to be a small town, ripped of its status as a harbor town.
Hethren Filmach: Reigned 522 – 537
Hethren gained the position of Filmach early, as Medlon died early. Hethren wasn’t the violent man as his father was — he was more an animal lover. Hethren focused more on the Khustinia Islands, where Khustin found many flora and fauna. Hethren also found ten islands, previously undiscovered, around the Khustinia Islands. He named these islands the Hethrenia Islands, though they are still part of the Khustinia province. Around the Hethrenia Islands, Hethren found a certain type of fish, which he named the Alpha. These fish are apparently more nutritious and made the people stronger than they already were. The Alpha were transported to the Khustinia Islands so that the people don’t need to travel as far to catch them. Hethren also found a certain type of bird, akin to the seagull. These seagull-like birds were very proficient in catching the Alpha and other fish. Hethren got the idea to train these birds to catch fish for them, and the birds were named Hehrs.
In 530, people started disappearing suddenly and rumors started spreading that dragons arrived in Machken and started eating the people. The county turned into slight chaos since everyone was struck by fear. Hethren went investigating and soon found caves in the south of Medlonia. Indeed, dragons were present in these caves and they were angry. Hethren tried many things to calm them down, even sending the Demachnor after them, but to no avail. The dragons prevailed and remained angry. The people of Machken were revolting but as the Filmach was all powerful, he remained the sole ruler of Machken, but not for very long.
Luithan Tebmach: Reigned 537 – 565
Luithan saw that the chaos grew larger in the county and wanted to solve the source of the problem. First of all, the few towns that the people occupied were growing overpopulated and the people were divided amongst proponents and opponents of The Mach. Luithan decided to scout for new areas where people could settle. He moved the proponents of The Mach to the northeast of Hamania and the opponents to the southeast of Medlonia. The towns of Akkun and Hall were founded, respectively. He also wanted to build a bridge between the two towns and went on a journey. Luithan promised that when he returned, and the bridge was finished, the people would feel as united as the bridge that connects them.
Luithan traveled to the caves of the dragons to figure out their problem. Unable to communicate with them, he literally moved into their caves and lived there among the dragons. The dragons were restless, but accepted Luithan nonetheless, since he had such a calm vibe. Having lived with the dragons for over a year, he figured out their problem. The Alpha that were transported to Khustinia caused a shift in the ecosystem, causing a certain type of bear to move away from Medlonia. With the bears gone, the dragons lost their source of food and started to feed on the Humans. Luithan simply transported the Alpha back to the Hethrenia Islands and the problem solved itself. The dragons calmed down and were named the Luan, with the caves called the Luan Caves.
When Luithan returned, the bridge was done and the people cheered, as their problems were gone. The idea of the bridge was so popular that several bridges were built between the Khustinia Islands. These bridges were named the Luithania Bridges, and solved the problem of traveling between the cliff-ridden islands. One Luan also got so attached to Luithan that he followed him back to Siumach and settled in caves near the town. Luithan was praised as the savior of the people and a brilliant man. When his reign was over, he mounted his Luan took off to the horizon so that his son, Gerlen, won’t have to live in Luithan’s shadow.
Gerlen Slomach: Reigned 565 – 588
Though the people of Machken were generally happy after Luithan’s reign, the county got into a decay, due to the lack of finances. Gerlen wanted to start the trade again, but listened to his people and refrained from doing so, as to not risk another attack. Instead, Gerlen went on a journey similar as Luithan did at the start of his reign. Gerlen decided to trek through the mountains in the south of Hamania. There, he found many resources that could be used to reinforce the fragile houses the people lived in, and improve the weapons and tools the people used. These mountains were later named the Gerlenia Mountains and became the main source of stone and iron. After the depression that Hethren left, this caused a lot of positive attitude from the people. New professions also started forming, such as builders, blacksmiths and miners.
Since the Alpha were moved back to the Hethrenia Islands, people ate less of this fish and stopped getting stronger. Gerlen went to investigate a different way to make the people stronger and traveled to the Hethrenia Islands. He soon found that the actual source is the seaweed that grew around the Hethrenia Islands. This seaweed, if eaten raw, gives people more strength. The seaweed was later named Gellen.
Gerlen came to an early death when he fell off the cliffs near the Gerlenia Mountains, putting Destin at the helm at the young age of 18.
